Environmental Justice is Racial Justice

Environmental Justice is Racial Justice, and that is why we have been replacing all of our chocolate packaging with sustainable materials. We care about what happens after you eat our chocolate too, what impact do we have long after you have enjoyed a Fortuna product?

We are so proud to announce any product you order from our website is now wrapped with 100% compostable or 100% recyclable materials.

Our envelopes, the ones that we use to wrap our solid chocolate, they are 100% compostable!

What does that mean? "Compostable packaging is typically made from a number of renewable plant-based materials and/or bio-polymers. To be certified home compostable, a product must break down in home compost within 180 days and 90 days in commercial composting conditions"

Our core values include sustainability and justice, that is why we have been working this past year to remove plastic from our packaging. We are not stopping at the individually wrapped chocolate you love but have also considered the shipping materials we are using to get that chocolate to your home, or the home of a loved one.

Our gorgeous shipping tape used to secure your shipping boxes is compostable!

"It’s made from completely recycled materials and is water activated, which means that its surface isn’t coated in wax. Instead, a water-activated tape dispenser or a sponge we provide activates the stickiness of the tape. This is because glossy or wax-coated tape doesn’t break down in composting and isn’t biodegradable, but our tape does" - No Issue Co.

Caring for our BIPOC amigxs who bear the unbalanced burden of environmental harms means thinking through each step of what we make. This includes considering what happens to our packaging long into the future once you are finished with it - our responsibility continues. We care about the impact we make starting from how we purchase cacao to what happens with our packaging after you eat the chocolate we have made.

We use a 100% recycled, compostable alternative to bubble wrap or styrofoam fillers. We use it to pack your chocolate orders carefully inside of your shipping box. It is produced by a local Colorado company we love and admire for all of the hard work they are doing to produce sustainable packaging solutions. When you order chocolate it will arrive snuggled into this, when you unbox your order, please recycle it or add it to your compost bin.

When considering how Fortuna chocolate enters and exits the world we believe it is crucial to evaluate our environmental impact. Witnessing our beloved BIPOC amigxs being harmed by a system of injustice, including environmental factors, we are examining how we can be a force for good.

Our tissue paper - It is beautiful, functional and will decompose without leaving toxic chemicals in the soil or water.

"The tissue paper we use is made from cellulose fiber and is free of acid, lignin and sulfur. This means the paper won’t leave behind any of these chemicals when decomposing. The trees used to make our products are responsibly harvested & Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified” - No Issue Co.

Please think of your impact when making purchases. We will continue to think of you when we evaluate sourcing Fortuna - from the delicious cacao bean to the box carrying chocolate to your home.

As COVID continues to keep us sheltering at home for the safety of all, the need for shipping and deliveries has increased. As a result the volume of materials needed to carry this influx to your home is also increasing. That is why we believe it is even more important to choose wisely when we put your orders together.

We are making choices like our shipping boxes. Sourced from an awesome local Colorado company, they are 100% recyclable it is also produced with 95% post-consumer content and is completely biodegradable!

"Recycled packaging is made from previously used plastic products, including single use bags, bottles and other common plastic items. The plastic is processed at a recycling facility and put back into circulation, thus doubling its lifespan. Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators - it conserves natural resources and prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials. Basically instead of making something new - we’re taking something already in circulation to give it a second life"

Labels have been the most difficult piece in our puzzle of sustainability. We love the soy based ink and the compostability of our current labels from No Issue Co.

"Soy-based ink is an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum or oil-based inks on the market, as it relies on a 100 percent renewable source (soy oil) that’s made in abundance and is less costly to grow for farmers. As well as being biodegradable, soy-based ink lasts just as long as other inks and has the added bonus of producing brighter, more vibrant colors" - No Issue Co.

However the release sheets (the part of the sticker you do not use) are coated with silicone which is not compost friendly or recyclable, meaning we have not met 100% of our production or BOH sustainability goals. The good news is we are working with a local company that is developing recyclable release sheets and No Issue Co. is also working to make their stickers 100% compostable and when they do we will celebrate!
